おろす【下ろす･降ろす】

1 【下ろす】 〔高い所から下方へ移動させる〕 take down; lower; bring down; put [pull] down; (手をのばして棚などから) reach down.

●縄ばしご[ロープ]を下ろす let down [lower] a rope ladder [rope]

・雪を屋根から下ろす shovel snow off a roof

・箱を棚から下ろす take down a box [carton] from a shelf

・机を 2 階から 1 階へ下ろす bring a desk down from the second floor to the first floor

・(おんぶしていた)子供を下ろす lower a child (from one's back)

・腰を下ろす ⇒こし¹ 1.

●〔挙げた手を〕 はい, 下ろしなさい. All right, put your hands down.

・彼は振り上げたこぶしを下ろした. He lowered the fist he had raised.

・次は腕を上げたり, 下ろしたりの体操です. For our next calisthenic exercise we raise and lower our arms.

・子猫を木から下ろしてやった. I lifted [took] the kitten down from the tree.

・〔筆算で〕 0 をそのまま下ろしてきて答えは 20 です. You bring down the zero and the answer is twenty.

2 【下ろす】 〔船などを水面に移す〕 lower.

●ボートを下ろす lower a boat.

●救命ボートを全部下ろせ. Lower all lifeboats!

3 【下ろす】 〔旗など掲げてあったものを取り外す〕 take [pull, haul] down; lower.

●帆を下ろす strike (a) sail

・旗を下ろす lower [pull down, haul down] a flag.

4 【下ろす】 〔幕など上げてあったものを下げる〕 drop; let fall; let [pull] down; lower.

●シャッターを下ろす lower [pull down, roll down] a shutter

・日よけを下ろす lower [pull down, draw down, let down] a blind

・幕を下ろす lower [drop, bring down] a curtain

・(結い上げていた)髪を下ろす let down one's hair

・(はしょっていた着物の)すそを下ろす unhitch the skirt 《of a kimono》

・(背がのびたので)スカートの上げを下ろす undo [let out] the tuck of a skirt.

5 【下ろす】 〔切り落とす〕 cut off.

●下枝を下ろす trim [prune, lop] off the low(er) branches of a tree

・髪を下ろす ⇒かみ⁵.

6 〔(車から)人を出す〕 set 《a passenger》 down; drop sb off; 〔荷物を出す〕 unload.

●手を貸して降ろしてやる help sb out off 《a car》

・バスガイドはその老婦人に手を貸してバスから降ろしてあげた. The tour guide lent a hand to help the old woman get off the bus.

●彼はおばあさんを車いすから降ろしてあげた. He helped an old woman out of her wheelchair.

・日比谷で降ろしてください. Let me [Drop me] off at Hibiya.

・〔エレベーターの中で〕 社長は 4 階で降ろしてくれと秘書に言った. The company president asked his secretary to let him off on the fourth floor.

・タクシーは客を降ろすとそのまま U ターンして戻っていった. As soon as the taxi driver let the passenger off he made a U-turn and went back the way he came.

・トラックから下ろされた積み荷はフォークリフトで倉庫に運ばれます. The freight unloaded from trucks is carried to a warehouse by forklifts.

・ちょっとこのスーツケースを下ろすのを手伝ってちょうだい. Could you unload this suitcase for me?

7 【下ろす】 〔神仏や客などに供した物を下げる〕 ⇒さげる¹ 6; 〔不要品を下位の者に与える〕 pass on; hand [pass] down.

●兄のランドセルを弟に下ろす hand down to a younger son an older son's schoolbag.

8 【下ろす】 〔預けてあるものを引き出す〕 take out of [draw from] 《an account》; withdraw [draw out] 《money》.

●貯金を下ろす withdraw [draw out] savings.

9 【下ろす】 〔新しく使い始める〕 wear [put on, use] for the first time.

●シャツを下ろす put on a new shirt [a new shirt for the first time]

・靴を下ろす wear a new pair of shoes [a new pair of shoes for the first time]

・筆を下ろす 〔初めてその筆を使う〕 use a (new) pen for the first time; 〔文章を書き始める〕 begin to write

・箸(_はし)を下ろす 〔初めてその箸を使う〕 use a (new) pair of chopsticks for the first time; 〔食べ始める〕 begin eating

・下ろしたて ⇒おろしたて¹.

●新しく下ろしたばかりのノートに落書きされた. Someone scribbled in the new notebook I had just started using.

10 【降ろす】 〔役を外す･低い地位に移す〕 remove sb from a position.

●社長の座から降ろす remove sb from the presidency

・主役を降ろされる be removed from the leading role

・低い地位に降ろされる be demoted to a low position

・番組を降ろされる be dropped from a program.

●そのピッチャーは 5 回で降ろされたことが不満だった. The pitcher was unhappy about being taken out in the fifth inning.

11 【下ろす】 〔堕胎する〕 have an abortion (performed); commit feticide.

●子供を下ろす have an abortion; abort a child.

12 【降ろす】 〔神霊などを呼び寄せる〕 call down [invoke] 《a spirit into a medium》.

●霊を降ろす call down [invoke] a spirit.

13 【下ろす】 〔(根を)のばす〕 strike root.

●その木は岩だらけの斜面にしっかり根を下ろしている. That tree has struck root firmly in a rocky incline [slope].
